We don’t close down for the winter!
In fact, it is a lovely time of year to visit. While known to be one of the coldest places in the lower 48, a typical winter day can be defined as a blue-bird day. With vivid blue skies, abundant sunshine and fresh snow, you’ll be thankful for the crisp air while you enjoy your outdoor activities. The stars love to show off on frigid, clear winter nights.
Snowmobiling – Stanley is home to some of the most scenic and untouched snowfields in the region and “sledheads” love enjoying amazing untouched snow and beautiful sunshine. The area is often featured in professional snowmobile videos, but keep in mind Sawtooth basin has riding areas for all experience levels.
Sawtooth Traxx can assist you with snowmobile rentals and local riding information.
Ice Skating – Did you know Stanley has one of the few outdoor ice rinks in the northwest? It is open and free to the public and ice skates can be borrowed from the well-stocked shed on site. With the Sawtooths towering over the rink, you’re sure to have an amazing and unique skating experience.
Skiing and Snowshoeing – The Sawtooth National Recreation Area has many miles of groomed Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Trails. These areas are cared for by a dedicated group of locals that highly value this scenic winter exercise. The Sawtooth Wilderness is home to some of the most epic backcountry ski terrain in the country, and we’ve got a great system of yurts that was built by dedicated local guides that know the area better than anyone. Find links to trail information here (stanleycc.org).
Relaxing – if outdoor recreation isn’t your thing, take a soak in the Mountain Village Hot Spring and enjoy the stunning view.
Winter Events – Stanley is home to some great winter events:
Stanley Winterfest – a wild and wacky weekend for the whole family!
Salmon River Snowmobiler’s Ball & Fun Run – support our local Snowmobile Club with their annual fun run!
Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel – Curlers from across the country gather to compete in this interesting sport.
Sawtooth Ski Club’s Annual Ski Festival – A weekend full of skiing, soup on the trails and a silent auction.
